It depicts Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (1867–1951), a Finnish officer and statesman who served as Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish Armed Forces during the Winter War and the Continuation War. Prior to this, he had served as an officer in the Russian Army, including during the Russo-Japanese War and the First World War. During the Second World War, Mannerheim led Finland in its war against the Soviet Union and was appointed Marshal of Finland in 1942. From 1944 to 1946, Mannerheim served as President of Finland, leading the country during its transition to an armistice with the Soviet Union and throughout the subsequent Lapland War.
