This model is dedicated to Heinrich Ehrlers Messerschmitt Bf 109E-7 . Born in Oberbalbach in 1917, Ehrler achieved over 200 aerial victories by April 1945 at the age of only 27. He flew a wide variety of aircraft types during his career, including the Me 262 jet aircraft. Due to a misjudgment of the situation, he shared responsibility for the sinking of the battleship Tirpitz.
The model shows the Bf 109E-7 that Ehrler flew in Finland in 1942 with the 4./JG 5. The emblem of his squadron is affixed to the left engine cowling, and his kill marks can be seen on the rudder. The E-7 was a further development of the famous ‘Emil’ series, equipped with a 1,175 hp Daimler-Benz DB 601N engine, which enabled it to reach a maximum speed of approx. 570 km/h at an altitude of 5,000 m. A striking innovation was the possibility of carrying a drop tank under the fuselage, which significantly increased the range – an important advantage in the vastness of the north. The armament consisted of two MG 17 machine guns above the engine and two MG FF/M 20 mm cannons in the wings. On 4 April 1945, after shooting down two bombers, Ehrler sent his last radio message:
‘[...] Shot down two bombers; out of ammunition. I'm going to ram now. Goodbye, see you in Valhalla!’
Shortly afterwards, he rammed an enemy aircraft and was killed.
