As early as 1935, General von Manstein demanded a special vehicle for infantry support, which should be able to destroy enemy fortifications such as positions and bunkers in direct fire. In 1936, Daimler-Benz received the order to design such a vehicle. The Panzer 3 served as the starting point. In order for the vehicle to be as low as possible, the designers decided not to attach a turret. Instead, they put the "7.5cm StuK 37 L / 24" in a tank structure on the almost unchanged chassis of the Pz. III. The first assault guns were used in the western campaign. The vehicle was 5.4 m long, 2.95 m wide and 1.96 m high. The combat weight was 22.2 t, which with the help of the 12-cylinder Maybach engine could reach up to 40 km / h on the road and 19 km / h off-road. The maximum driving range was 140 km on the road & 90 km off-road.
