The M4 Sherman was a defining combat vehicle of the US Army in World War II. A medium tank developed in 1940, it was used by almost all Allied forces and in all theaters of war. With around 50,000 units manufactured in various versions, it is one of the most widely produced tanks of the time. Designed for mobility and ease of production, it was powered by a 9-cylinder radial engine or later variants with other engines and reached around 38 km/h. With its 75 mm cannon, it was initially effective, but later fell behind against more powerful German tanks. Thanks to its reliability, easy maintenance and high production numbers, the Sherman remained a backbone of the Allied armored forces until the end of the war and continued to be used worldwide after 1945.
